Investigation of pre-cooling as a recommended measure to improve residential buildings’ thermal resilience during heat waves

More intense heat waves are expected to occur more frequently in the twenty-first century. During severe waves, cooling capacity shortfall and overheating likely residential buildings, this will adversely affect occupant's thermal comfort productivity. We propose a strategy of pre-cooling house during off-peak hours mitigate waves. Simulation results prototype single-family show that adopting rule-based control (RBC) thermostat setpoint schedule is effective reducing discomfort, efficacy depends upon several building characteristics. An optimized (OC) was developed based on simulation building. A simplified yet improved RBC (IRBC) then extracted from OC for practical implementation at larger scale. The effects IRBC were evaluated King District Fresno, which contains 814 buildings. Results both schedules can reduce effectively slightly better than most findings support California government's recommendation overheating, be further with an broadcast residents through early alert messages before wave. • Pre-cooling mitigates buildings heatwaves.
